2022 RIKARD Riesling

$35.00
$29.75

2022 RIKARD Riesling aims to show fruit-driven and floral characters, very much in the lime and citrus blossom spectrum. Purity of acid and freshness is important, as is youthful drinkability. Complexity in 2022 comes via multiple vineyard sites and clones – utilising the early pick of each. Barrel fermentation and regular lees stirring brings a textural feel in the mouth, and there’s enough phenolic structure to hold the wine together and have it pair nicely with food.

Colour – Pale with green hues

Nose – Lime blossom, jasmine and preserved lemon leap out first, followed by a slatey minerality, some fennel and a slight mealy, biscuity character. Intense and interesting nose with youthful freshness.

Palate – Lime and green apple fruit characters are overlaid with nettles and green apricot. The acid structure is juicy without being tart and carries the abundance of fruit well. Lovely balance and intensity, with a myriad of spices popping up and then retreating with each sip. Oatmeal and a hint of nougat linger at the finish.

Description

2022 was a fabulous year for Riesling. The cool years always are. With such a long, slow, protracted growing season and ripening period, the fruit had extra time to accumulate incredible aroma profile and depth of flavour.  This, combined with the benefit of the high natural acidity that comes with the variety – especially in cold, high-altitude sites such as ours, results in wines which look gorgeous in their youth but will age beautifully also.

We were very lucky to be able to source fruit from five individual vineyards in 2022. Each of these sites are among the coolest in Orange and contain multiple different clones of Riesling. For us, this brings added complexity and blending options to the winemaking table. To add to this clonal complexity, we also picked each vineyard at varying physiological ripeness levels, to give us parcels of wine with a whole array of different flavour spectrums – and yet more complexity. Add to that some variation in how they were treated in the winery, and we have multiple options and scope with which to “build” our wine and play around with style

Reviews

“Granny Smith apple slices, lime blossom and zest with hints of kiwi fruit. Bone dry with a touch of pithy and sandy phenolics across the palate. A classic cool-climate style but with enough lees work to build complexity.”

Classy Riesling. Bone dry, it’s a very tasty drink calling out for some time in the pool or by the beach.

Green apples, lemons and beautiful white flowers explode from the glass. A portion saw time on skins to build some texture and that has done the job. A minerally backbone courses its way through with some lime juice hitching a ride. A really enjoyable wine.

Drink to five years+
