2021 RIKARD Shiraz

Our Shiraz comes from a small, single-vineyard site at 900m above sea-level called the “Amboseli” Vineyard. It is always made in extremely small quantities and is very much a labour of love for us at RIKARD.

A typical “Amboseli” Shiraz shows noticeable blueberry fruit-characters, with vibrant acidity, white pepper, and velvety tannin structure. It is a medium bodied wine which is structured and elegant and will age gracefully.

In 2017 we took over the management of “Amboseli Vineyard” – a small, 25 year old plot of about 700 dry grown Shiraz vines.  The vines are at 900m above sea-level on the Western outskirts of Orange. This is one of the higher and cooler Shiraz vineyards in the Orange wine region, right at the limits of where a mid-to-late ripening variety like this can reach full maturity.

The site of the vineyard is extremely fertile, and the vines are therefore very vigorous – a trait that Shiraz is notorious for. We’ve therefore worked hard in the vineyard since taking it on to ensure a much lower cropping rate and better exposure and airflow for the fruit. We’ve also lowered the cordons by 40cm, changed the pruning methods, and adopted a sustainable approach to our practices regarding herbicide and pesticide usage. The results are already beginning to show.

In 2021, the long, cool growing season leading into harvest meant that it was the latest for many years. Extensive canopy management was required to maintain control of the vines, facilitate airflow, and minimise disease pressure. It was worth it. We harvested a small crop of beautifully flavoured Shiraz, rich in aroma, colour, and natural acidity. In the winery we treated this wine very gently, much like Pinot Noir, seeking elegance and reflection of this unique site.
